The John Deere LX279 is a lawn and garden tractor from the John Deere LX200-series. The John Deere LX279 garden tractor was produced at the John Deere Horicon Works plant (Horicon, Wisconsin, USA) from 1999 to 2003.

The John Deere LX279 lawn tractor used a V-twin 90° liquid-cooled 4-stroke internal combustion Kawasaki FD501V (437 cc, 26.67 cu-in) gasoline engine with vertical PTO-shaft The FD501V has OHV (overhead valve design); cast iron cylinder liners; horizontal draft type carburetor with fixed main jet; mechanical diaphragm type fuel pump; full transistor ignition system with fixed timing. The Kawasaki FD501V uses a full pressure lubrication system with spin-on oil filter and dual element air cleaner.
A 67.0 mm (2.64 in) cylinder bore and 62.0 mm (2.44 in) piston stroke give the motor a total of 437 cc of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 9.3:1. The Kawasaki FD501V produced 17.0 HP (12.6 kW) at 3,600 rpm.
The John Deere LX279 is equipped with Tuff Torq K62 belt-driven hydrostatic transmission (infinite forward and reverse), internal wet disc brakes, and manual sector-and-pinion steering. This tractor used open operator station, independent PTO-shaft with electric clutch and 11.5 L (3.0 US gal) fuel tank.
