  1. I have the check mark for 'Play user interface sound effects' and everything else is check marked for that matter. I look down the 'alert sound' list and the empty trash sound IS NOT even there!! And on a side note I don't know why they call it 'choose an alert sound' because I can't 'choose' any of them. I click on them and it plays the sound.
  2. For most of us, the little sound effects a Mac makes aren’t particularly useful. The trash can sound and screenshot sound in particular don’t serve much purpose. How-To Geek reminds us that.

Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit GarageBand app. Sound should return.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
