Description3DS is one of the file formats used by the Autodesk 3ds Max 3D modeling, animation and rendering software. It was the native file format of the old Autodesk 3D Studio DOS, which was popular until its successor replaced it in April 1996. Technical details3ds is a binary file format. Our motivation is to get a way on installing software in the Nintendo 3DS using a CIA, and make sure that said software can work on Citra, a 3DS emulator. Our goal is to run 3DS games both in the 3DS and in the PC.

The CIA format is utilized because it is a simple enough way to “install” software into the 3DS, as well as ease of modifying its contents (in the case of “modding”). These CIA files can then easily be installed in Citra.

To be able to use a CIA, one must first have a CIA of said game. Guides are available for creating a CIA from a physical cartridge or from an installed title.

Our CIA file is encrypted, so we have to decrypt it. (At times, installing encrypted CIAs on my 3DS works, but at others it fails completely.) To do so, we have to use GodMode9.

  1. Copy the CIA over to the 3DS SD card. Make sure that there is sufficient free space.
  2. Open up GodMode9, and navigate to the CIA file.
  3. Open up our CIA options by pressing A on it.
  4. Select CIA image options..., choose Decrypt file (...), and select Decrypt inplace. Note that it will fail if the CIA is already decrypted.
  5. Wait. If it completes, we now have a decrypted CIA.

Our decrypted CIA can now be used to install to other 3DS systems the reader may have lying around, so it is important to store this aside (for example, in a redundant storage system or in an online service).

Emulation

The original guide is outdated. Currently, Citra is able to install (decrypted) CIAs easily.

  1. Make sure that you have copied over your system archives from a 3DS.
  2. On the menu bar, choose File > Install CIA. Navigate to the CIA file you want to install.
  3. Once it’s done installing, you should be able to play it.
